Maria Bucur and Jeff Goldfarb discuss how the development of and challenges to gender studies in Romania embody wider continuing debates about democracy in Europe today. Maria Bucur is the John V. Hill Professor of History and Gender Studies at Indiana University. She is the author of six books and over forty articles on the recent history of Romania and gender relations. Jeffrey Goldfarb is the Michael E. Gellert Professor of Sociology at The New School for Social Research. He is also the Co-Executive Editor of Public Seminar. His work primarily focuses on the sociology of media, culture and politics.
