This event brings together two scholars with a deep interest in how civil society, feminist scholarship, and democratic practices have developed in both inter-related and disparate ways in post-communist European societies. Their discussion will center on how the development of and challenges to gender studies in Romania embody wider continuing debates about democracy in Europe today.

Maria Bucur is the John V. Hill Professor of History and Gender Studies at Indiana University. She is the author of six books and over forty articles on the recent history of Romania and gender relations.

Jeffrey Goldfarb is the Michael E. Gellert Professor of Sociology at The New School for Social Research. He is also the Co-Executive Editor of Public Seminar. His work primarily focuses on the sociology of media, culture and politics.

Presented by Democracy Seminar and Transregional Center for Democratic Studies at The New School for Social Research.
